AboutProjectsContactLiyuan Dong

As a cross-disciplinary interaction designer with a background in architecture and interaction design, Liyuan Dong explores how to build relationships between people and cities through interactive behaviors. Her projects attempt various urban experiences from different dimensions and perspectives, while also focusing on the relationship between bodily perception and urban experience. Presentation methods include embodied interaction, tangible interaction, UX design, as well as illustration, among other aspects.

"No Plan Community (NPC)" is her current focus of exploration. She is contemplating how people randomly roam in cities, how to acquire rich urban information by chance, and how to record memories belonging to themselves from their own perception.

Currently, she is studying in the Digital and Interaction Design (DID) program at Politecnico di Milano and is on exchange at the University of Art and Design Linz in the Interface Cultures (IC) program.

More than one Milan: A Storytelling City Installation
“LEAN IN CLOSER AND LEND YOUR EAR,
BECAUSE MILAN HAS A STORY TO TELL.”

“More than One Milan” preserves the stories and history of the city. Establishing a connection between city roamers and the city, employing a nomadic approach to craft an urban installation, A nomadic strategy is an approach that is constantly moving and evolving, rather than being fixed or confined to a specific location or rigid plan. In the context of urban installations, a nomadic strategy could involve creating temporary or movable structures, relocated to different areas of a city to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.

More than one Milan: Olfactory Map

“Come  CLOSER AND LEND YOUR nose,
MILAN HAS so much to explore.”

The Olfactory Map system aims to shift the perspective and highlight the significance of smell in shaping the image of stores and venues. Using the Brera area as the target place, we will create an interactive experience project centered around the olfactory. Although smell memories are momentary, they possess the unique ability to evoke memories and trigger synesthetic experiences. Leveraging this characteristic, we will employ smell as the core element in our design endeavors.

FROM THE MOMENT

Tired of text communication between screens, tired of life moments that can't be grasped, tired of the world full of countless digital standards, I want to seek new romanticism in ambiguity and new language in the ancient way of transmission.

I made an installation to tell stories in a new mechanical language. In modern society, many rules and orders developed by human beings maintain the normal operation of a city and meet the needs of human society, but I think in this environment, human beings have lost some self-evident perceptual abilities in life. I hope my work can convey the new language of the combination of ancient objects and current media so that people who are like gears in the machine city can occasionally get away from day-to-day life, so as to obtain a new romantic feeling belonging to mechanical numbers.

While  Blinking

What is the most intelligent part of man?

I think it's the eyes. They blink all their life, absorb the information of the world, and let us think about our own life when we close our eyes.

In this installation project, I hope that by amplifying a small behavior in an individual, participants will experience a blinking behavior during the interaction. The results of the installation are sculptural, with each person's same behavior getting a different product, in the hope that participants will reflect on the relationship between each of us and the world as an object.
